Teacher Reflections: Hands on Art

There is a lot of painting going on this week in the art room. And, with all of that painting, there is a lot of learning how to clean our paintbrushes and what to do during cleanup. It'll take a few tries to get it just right, but that's OK.

The Kindergarten classes just finished their jungle artworks. After we've painted a leafy border, we discuss various animals you might encounter in a jungle. Then, I show them how to draw the animals by starting the body with an oval shape or a rectangle shape.

3rd Grade classes are discussing Van Gogh and learning how to paint "brushy". The first step of this large project is to create flowers and mix the brushstrokes. This artist kept painting her artwork even after she put it in on the drying rack. She was still standing at the rack with her paintbrush adding the final touches.

4th Grades are now painting their Keith Haring artworks using secondary colors. At times, it may be challenging since some of the drawings had narrow arms or legs, but the learning process about choosing the correct paintbrush is important.

Finally, the Jr. High is working on a large sculpture project in which they plaster wrap their hands. Later, they will have the freedom to integrate other sculptural items to create a message with the hand being the central theme. This project brought the class together. They worked in groups and some of the less confident students began to show leadership and offer suggestions on how the project should proceed.
