Teacher Reflections: Creature Designs

As Spring Break arrives, there are just some awesome projects going on in the Art room.

One of the projects that we use to meet some reading, writing, and story-telling goals is the Story Quilt concept inspired by Faith Ringgold. It's a project idea I've known since undergrad, and each year, it never gets stale. However, this year, I've introduced some math concepts in it and worked on measuring a grid border for the quilt designs. In my curriculum, I think this is my strongest project to connect with the Common Core Reading and Math standards. I chose this picture because this 3rd Grade artist is showing early exploration with 3-d perspective (look at the table she drew!)

The current 7th grade project is a difficult challenge. Their goal is to create a creature with an emphasis on a personality trait. To start this work, we looked at Pixar concept sketches and other animators who read a script and began designing creatures. We read an interview as well that discussed the personality of a character and how to draw that into their character. First, the 7th grade artists drew some sketches and created a painting of their character. Then, they had to work on a papier mache model of their creature. The first image shows examples of some very solid armature work as well as confident work. The next image shows a young artist's humor shinging through with a creature flying through the clouds making a rainbow behind it.
