This week was just 2 days long due to Thanksgiving, but we stayed busy in the artroom. All I can show for this week are the Tinted Castles made by 1st Grade artists. It's a rather long lesson, but it's rich with art concepts.
The students start off by folding paper to make 16 rectangles. Then, I show them how to mix paint colors with white paint to make a tint. This is the first time they've painted, so there was a lot of monitoring how they mix, take care of their brushes, and how to keep their paints clean. It takes a couple of tries to get it just right, and by tries I mean art sessions.
After that paper is painted, we talk about drawing a simple background using 3 lines stretching horizontally across their paper. Then, I just want them to paint that. We talk about landscape, watercolor resist, and horizon lines.
Now that that is finished, we start cutting the tinted paper into different size castles. To cover atmospheric perspective, they place the largest castle in front, and place the smaller castles further back. I have them look around the artroom with their pincher fingers near their eyes and ask, "Why can you fit the large window between your fingers when we know it's larger than us?" This just gets them to think that large items are smaller when they are far away. I really only teach them 2 sizes, but I challenge them to see if they can do more. The last step is to use construction paper crayons and color on top of their artworks.
