Teacher Reflections: Kiss the Paper

Running down to the last few weeks of Jr. High, we pushed to finish our Plaster Hand Sculptures. The neat aspect of this project was to see how far these students wanted to work on it. Some students added a lot of different elements, whereas some students focused a lot on painting. Some artists worked in a group, while others decided to finish their pieces individually. I plan to put together a finished video of these artworks soon.

When I became an art teacher, I didn't realize what sort of strange sayings will be uttered from my mouth. For instance, in Kindergarten alone this week, I had to tell students to listen for the glue to breath to make sure it's not clogged (gently squeezing the glue makes it make a gasping noise). Oh, and how about telling them to make their glue bottle kiss the paper (touch the tip of the glue to the paper so they don't hold their glue bottle a foot above their paper and let glue puddle on). I even showed them how to make glue "disappear" off of their hands by showing them that rubbing hands gets the glue off. Our project this week was a slight change from last year's. We usually paint 3 different lines with black paint, but this year, we cut out different lines and glued that down. It worked pretty well.

The last project this week was having 1st graders paint simple backgrounds with different lines and watercolor paints. These will be the backgrounds to our castles. This project has a lot of teaching and learning in it, but it takes a long time. I need to find something simpler and quicker to cover our art concepts when I see them every other week.
