Teacher Reflections: Finished Chuck Close Paintings

As my Jr. High artists were working on their large Chuck Close influenced paintings, I began to notice how they were losing focus. Some students even expressed how they weren't enjoying this assignment as much as previous projects. For more background on this project, you can find it in last week's blog entry. I've already seen their discontent, and so this week I felt that I needed to address this issue.
We had a class meeting to talk about this project, how they felt about it, and how they wanted to continue on with it. Well, unlike their informal honesty, they clammed up when we had an official discussion about our art status. All I got in some responses were a few thumbs up. So, I told them how I was feeling about these paintings. I told them I can sense the lack of enthusiasm and how I understood that the goal of meaningful art fell a little short on this assignment. I also shared with them something I read last week about the habits of artists. I learned that all artists face a time in the production of an artwork in which they need to decide whether to continue a piece or to stop it in order to work on something more productive.
After this, I told them that they can choose to finish this artwork or to move onto something different. Suprisingly, most of the students continued to work on this and I feel like the finished product has a place in our school. These paintings were 2 by 3 feet, so I really want to display them and brighten up the hallways.
