Teacher Reflections: Kindergarten Creativity

I'm splitting this week's teacher reflections into 2 parts. The first is this series of images of Kindergarten artwork juxtaposed with 3rd grade.

This Kindergarten artist is working on an Amate style bird painting. Each year, this project changes slightly. Sometimes, we use brown construction paper, and sometimes we paint paper brown to mimic the tree bark paper the original artists would use. Years ago, one of my students was entered into the IAEA student art show for this project, so it is a keeper.

Speaking of the IAEA student show, the story quilt on the bottom is submitted to the show. I know the story quilt is a typical project, but what is amazing about this project is the Common Core adaptability. There is writing in narrative non-fiction, reading as research, math skills are challenged through measuring and patterning. The list can go on and on. It is a great project with great results.
