A few weeks ago, I was challenged to create a comic book inside a matchbook. Although I felt like it wasn't possible, I decided that maybe I can pull off a story with 15 books. The next step was tricky. I needed to figure out what type of story to go with. So, I bought some matchbooks. By the way, those matchbooks just so happened to be Collecive Presidents matchbooks. Yeah, I don't know either. And, before I go on, you can head over to the Tumblr site and see these panels in a larger view.

So, I looked at these matchbooks as inspiration to the story. And, still, somehow I came up with the matches to mimic a fence. That's when bottles on the fence showed up, and the main characters, Marvel's Hawkeye and DC's Vigilante, joined in. I really like the Vigilante. His character design has been the inspiration to my own Pecos Bill.

For each matchbook, I needed to devise a foreground and a background. I really wanted to utilize the 3-D relief that these books offer. In some of the matchbooks, I kept the matches there as support for the foreground piece, whereas some of the panels used the matches.

As the story progressed in my sketchbook, I realized that the story needed to be quick and straight to the point. But I struggled with coming up with an ending. Where would this back and forth between Vigilante and Hawkeye end?

Naturally, the story led itself to Hellboy, of course. And, so there is my first Matchbook comic. I'll be posting this in the store soon. If you'd like one, pre-orders are specially welcome. As for this book, this is being sent out to the challenger. You can also head over to the Tumblr site to see these closer up.
